If you were impressed by LG being able to squeeze an optical drive into its super-thin Blade P430 notebook, then you may need to sit down for Dell’s upcoming XPS 14z. The slot-loading DVD burner on the right of Dell’s new thin and powerful mobile business solution sits in a frame that’s just 0.9-inch (23 mm) thin – allowing Michael Dell’s company to claim the title of world’s thinnest, fully-featured 14-inch that includes an optical drive.

Like LG, Dell has also sacrificed some space around the edge of the XPS 14z’s 14-inch, 1366 x 768 resolution display so that it fits into a notebook frame generally reserved for 13.3-inch screens. A high definition 1.3 megapixel webcam and dual microphones top the screen, and a backlit, spill-resistant chiclet-style keyboard sits underneath.

Aimed at business users and given a stylish anodized aluminum finish, the 13.19 x 9.21 x 0.9-inch (335 x 234 x 23 mm) XPS 14z will be available in a choice of 2nd Gen Intel Core i5 or i7 dual-core processors supported by up to 8GB of DDR3 1333Mhz memory. There’s also an option to choose NVIDIA GeForce GT 520M graphics with 1GB of dedicated video memory and up to 750GB of 7200 RPM hard drive or 256GB SSD storage.

The 7 laptop features built-in Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6230 Wireless-N and Bluetooth 3.0 technology, one USB 3.0, one USB 2.0 and a HDMI 1.4 port, and Mini Display-Port and microphone/audio connectors. Dell says that users can expect over six hours battery life from the 8-cell battery.

The XPS 14z will be available in the U.S. and Canada from Nov. 1, and worldwide from Nov. 15 – prices start from US$999.

If you were to come up with a list of places you’re unlikely to stumble across ’s Street View trike snapping 360 degree panoramics, the banks of the would surely be pretty close to the top. Yet that’s precisely where the search behemoth’s imaging team is currently focusing its attention. Starting off with a 50 km stretch of the Rio Negro River, the team plans to document life in some our world’s most remote and richly biodiverse regions – visiting local communities, going inside village buildings and floating up and down the waterways to offer virtual visitors a unique insight into the wonders of the .

Often described as the lungs of the planet, the lush Amazon rainforest has been disappearing at a frighteningly rapid rate at the hands of mankind. Now thanks to Google, much of this immensely important region of the world is about to be saved – albeit digitally. Accepting an invite from the locals, Google’s Brazil and U.S. Street View teams have joined members of the Google Earth Outreach program to share their image collection expertise with non-profit conservation organization Amazonas Sustainable Foundation (FAS).

While in the area, the now-familiar Street View will be seen trundling down the narrow dirt paths that join villages and will capture images of the river, surrounding forests and adjacent river communities. Building interiors will also host an image capture tripod to give us all a sense of what it’s like to live and work in such communities. The teams will also mount the vehicle on a boat and record all-around views of the great river as it floats gently downstream, which will then be stitched together to produce 360 degree panoramas.

On completion of the project, Google will leave behind some technical equipment to allow FAS members to continue their work, and give them the means to share their way of life with the rest of the world.

Personally, I am champing at the bit to get to these Amazonian Street View images but, oddly enough, my first thought was to wonder whether any locals caught in Google’s Street View image snare will be treated to face blur or complete removal – but that’s probably just me.

Nokia World is the company’s annual event, where new devices, software solutions and the company’s objectives are unveiled. Held October 26-27 in London, this year’s event is particularly significant, due to the release of the first Nokia Windows-based smartphones, expected since Nokia inked a deal with Microsoft in a somewhat surprising move this February.

Nokia Lumia 800

The Lumia 800 is similar to the MeeGo-based Nokia N9 in terms of design. The 800′s polycarbonate unibody comes with the same dimensions and curved glass screen coating as the N9, while the main differences are hardware buttons on the Lumia’s front (Back, Start and Search) and a physical camera button. The Lumia 800 features a 3.7-inch AMOLED ClearBlack display running at 800 x 480 resolution. Its 8-megapixel camera is equipped with Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash, as well as HD 720p 30fps video recording capability.

Processing is provided by a 1.4GHz single-core Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8255 with the same Scorpion CPU as the one utilized in the Windows Phone-based HTC Titan and Samsung OMNIA W. There’s also 512 MB of RAM and 16GB of built-in memory, with an additional 25GB accessible online via SkyDrive. The Lumia 800 has a 1450mAh battery, with 13 hours of rated talktime in 2G, 9.5 hours in 3G and 335 hours of standby time.

Running Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) with browsing provided by Internet Explorer 9, the Lumia 800 comes with Nokia-specific software including Nokia Drive turn-by-turn free offline navigation with in-car user interface, MixRadio music-streaming app offering channels with “locally-relevant music,” as well as Gigfinder, allowing users to search for live local music, share discoveries on social networks and buy concert tickets.

Offered in cyan, magenta and black, the Nokia Lumia 800 is priced at EUR420 (US$584) before taxes. It’s scheduled to be rolled out in France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain and the UK this November, as well as in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan by the end of the year. Other markets will obtain the 800 in early 2012.

Nokia Lumia 710

The second Windows-based Nokia arrival, the Lumia 710, comes with a 3.7-inch 800 x 480 ClearBlack TFT display. It will be offered in black or white with choice of black, white, cyan, fuchsia and yellow interchangeable back covers to suite the user’s preferences. Smartphone photography enthusiasts can use its 5-megapixel snapper with autofocus, LED flash and 30fps HD 720p video recording.

As with the Lumia 800, the 710 runs Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) and comes equipped with Nokia Drive turn-by-turn free offline navigation. The unit is powered via the same 1.4GHz Qualcomm CPU, while it offers less built-in storage at 8GB. When it comes to connectivity, 3G up to HSDPA 14.4Mbps, WiFi and Bluetooth 2.1 are available. Equipped with a 1300mAh battery, the smartphone weighs in at 126 grams (4.4 oz) and it measures 119 x 62.4 x 12.5 mm (4.7 x 2.4 x 0.5 in).

Priced at EUR270 (US$375) before taxes, the Nokia Lumia 710 will appear first in Hong Kong, India, Russia, Singapore and Taiwan by the end of the year.
