The hourglass shape of the supernova remnant SN 1987A isnt as well balanced as thought, according to an August picture of the exploded star. Using data on the remnant from the European Southern Observatorys Very Large Telescope in Chile, astronomers were able to confirm that, when massive stars explode, some of the ejected material gets shot into space faster than other debris, as predicted by computer models.

Big Bears Sunspot

This crisp view of a sunspot, captured by New Jersey Institute of Technologys New Solar Telescope and released in August, may be the most detailed picture of its kind yet shot in visible light, astronomers say. The 5.25-foot (1.6-meter) telescope, which became operational in 2009, sits at the schools Big Bear Solar Observatory in the San Bernardino Mountains of California. The device uses a special deformable mirrorpart of whats called an adaptive optics systemto compensate for atmospheric distortions and produce ground-based images with about the same clarity as shots from orbiting observatories, experts say.

Best Space Photographs Of 2010 By NG: image gallery

Seen by NASAs Cassini spacecraft, jets of ice spewing from Saturns moon Enceladus seem to graze the bright edge of the in a shot released Tuesday. In reality, Enceladus orbits about 112,000 miles (180,000 kilometers) away from the top of Saturns atmosphere.

Discovered in 2005, the moons icy geysers shoot from fractures in the southern hemisphere and are thought to be driven by a subsurface layer of liquid water.

Hayabusas Fiery Return

best space photographs 05 Best Space Photographs Of 2010 By NG: image gallery Like a sparkling firework, much of the Japanese space probe Hayabusa disintegrates as it reenters Earths atmosphere on June 13. Hidden in the shower of sparks was a heat-shielded, 16-inch (40-centimeter) capsule later found to contain precious scrapings from an asteroid, which could help us understand how our planet and solar system formed.
Hayabusa is among the few spacecraft to return rock samples from space. Other such missions include the Apollo program, which retrieved moon rocks in the late 1960s and early 70s, and the comet-dust harvester Stardust, which crashed into the Utah desert at 28,900 miles (46,400 kilometers) an hour in 2006.
Ephemeral Lake

Asteroid 21 Lutetia is exposed, craters and all, in a picture captured in July by the European Space Agencys Rosetta spacecraft. Rosettas close encounter with Lutetia revealed a battered a possible remnant from the birth of our solar system, astronomers say.
To snap the above image, Rosetta swooped about 1,965 miles (3,162 kilometers) above Lutetias surface. The image is the highest-resolution taken of the space rock, located more than 270 million miles (440 million kilometers) away from Earth, between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter

Aurora Australis From Space

best space photographs 08 Best Space Photographs Of 2010 By NG: image gallery

Even for astronauts, this May image was a rare sight indeed: an aurora hovering over the southern Indian Ocean.
Auroras occur when charged particles from the sun collide with Earths upper atmosphere, causing atoms of oxygen and nitrogen to gain energy and then release it in the form of light.

Gulf Oil Spills Spread

best space photographs 09 Best Space Photographs Of 2010 By NG: image gallery
A satellite picture taken in April captures a small plane flying over rust-colored streamers of crude oil visible on the surface of the Gulf, about a week after the Deepwater oil rig sank into the Gulf of Mexico.
The extent of the spread made it more difficult for authorities to execute one of their planned strategies for containing the spillcontrolled burns of the oil.

Starbirth Near the Void

7 Amazing Transparent Animals – Wonders of Nature

is fascinating and often weird, it surprises us when we least expect. Some creatures use the camouflage techniques as a hunting and defense mechanism, others show everything they have – like transparent . Despite of what we are inclined to think, transparent and translucent animals live also on the ground, not only in the abyss of the ocean and we have visual proof of it. Nothing is photoshopped!
1. Transparent Frog

Umm, not so fast, prof have you seen the glass frog (above), native to the Venezuelan rainforest? Like the transparent frogs selectively bred in the lab from generations of pale-skinned Japanese Brown Frogs, the Glass Frogs internal organs and eggs can be seen without too much trouble. Word to Professor Sumida: take the grant money and run!
2. Transparent Cave Crayfish

Caves are some of the darkest places on the even sophisticated light-gathering instruments are unable to register a single photon in the deepest, darkest caves. Under these conditions, creatures including fish, spiders, insects and crayfish have evolved into troglobites: animals so precisely adapted to living in darkness that they cannot survive outside cave environments. Under such conditions, neither eyes nor pigmentation are necessary.
3. Transparent Sea Cucumber

Slow moving, soft bodied bottom dwellers for the most part, Sea Cucumbers are an ancient lineage of sea creatures who have evolved a variety of ways to survive and thrive over hundreds of millions of years of evolution. For some Sea Cucumbers, being transparent allows them to fly under the radar, as it were, of predators in search of a quick & easy kill.
4. Transparent Icefish

transparent animals wonders of nature 10 7 Amazing Transparent Animals – Wonders of Nature image gallery

Fund in the cold waters around Antarctica and southern South America, the crocodile icefish (Channichthyidae) feed on krill, copepods, and other fish. Their blood is transparent because they have no hemoglobin and/or only defunct erythrocytes. Their metabolism relies only on the oxygen dissolved in the liquid blood, which is believed to be absorbed directly through the skin from the . This works because can dissolve the most oxygen when it is coldest.
5. Transparent Amphipod

Called Phronima, this unusual animal is one of the many strange species recently found on an expedition to a -sea mountain range in the North Atlantic. In an ironic strategy for survival, this tiny shrimplike creature shows everything it has, inside and out, in an attempt to disappear.
6. Transparent Squid

Found on the southern hemispheres oceans, the Glass Squid (Teuthowenia pellucida) has light organs on its eyes and possesses the ability to roll into a ball, like an aquatic hedgehog.

Photography 100 Years Back

Today, when technology has reached its highest point of development in human’s history, when you can easily acquire a quality for a pretty small sum of money, we could conditionally say that it is easy to be a photographer. But, about hundred years ago, It wasn’t so easy to be a photographer, actually, it was pretty tough job.

At the very beginning of the , cameras weren’t so small and as they are today, they were huge and they weighted dozens of kilos. Taking was a nightmare too. You had only one chance for a perfect shot, unlike these days when you can take thousands of photos and chose only the best one.

Albert Khan was a photographer in those times and he was one amongst the first who chose photographing as their profession.

Those photos which you are watching right now were took by him between 1909 and 1931.
